Every year since 1960, “October 21” is being celebrated as “Police Commemoration Day”. The Police Commemoration Day was first celebrated in January 1960, at the Annual Conference of Inspectors General of Police of States and Union Territories to honour the martyrs of the October 21, 1959 incident, where China attacked. In the attack, 10 brave Indian Soldiers were killed and 7 were injured. The bodies of the soldiers were only surrendered after three weeks by the Chinese Soldiers. Through this day, the Police Department and the country express gratitude towards the officers and families who continue to serve the country till this day.

To mark the Police Commemoration Day and as a reminiscence to all police martyrs since the time of independence, the “National Police Memorial” was built at the crest of Shantipath in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, India. The Police Commemoration Day is a reminder and realisation to all Indians to be grateful for the services of the gallant officers who work round the clock to protect and safeguard from all kinds of trouble. While the border security force protects India’s borders, the Police Force of India operates internally, to fight crimes, disasters, accidents, natural calamities, and other internal matters.

While all other uniforms are well-respected, the Khaki Uniform of the Police Force is widely neglected. Most people fail to recognize the sacrifice and protection a police officer extends every day on duty. And so, not just on the Police Commemoration Day, each day, they deserve all the love and respect for their work. To celebrate them, each one of us can make small efforts like saluting a police officer whenever we see them, watching the parade on the Police Commemoration Day, visiting the National Police Memorial to pay respects, supporting & honour the families, and donating to the organisation.

A fun fact to know about the police is that out of every 1,00,000 people, only 130 are police officers which is a very low number. So, joining the force is also a great initiative to show support and admiration. So, on this October 21, 2022, “Police Commemoration Day”, each one should make a small contribution and appreciate the never-ending protection, safety, and justice each Police Officer extends.
