All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to be Set Up in Tamil Nadu by Year End
- C Vijaya Baskar, health minister on Friday announced that the Union health ministry is going to set up an AIIMS in Tamil Nadu by the end of the year.
- The state government suggested a list of five possible locations for the same.
C Vijaya Baskar, health minister on Friday announced that the Union health ministry is going to set up an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu by the end of the year.
The announcement was made when Vijay Baskar was attending the inauguration ceremony at the Institute of Child Health in Kilpauk for the facilities to be provided to the newborns. At the inauguration, he revealed that J P Nadda, the Union health minister has discussed establishing the AIIMS hospital by the year end and is, therefore, hopeful for the same.

The Centre in the Union Budget for 2015-16 made the announcement for establishing a 200-acre AIIMS facility in the state of Tamil Nadu at the expense of Rs. 2000 crore. A list of five possible locations were suggested by the state government including the following:
- Thoppur in Madurai district
- Perundhurai in Erode district
- Chengipatti in Tanjore district
- Pudukkottai city in Pudukkottai district
- Chengalpattu in Kanchipuram district
A committee of experts from the centre visited each of above places in the year 2016. Although the officials seem to be more impressed with Chengipatti in Tanjore district as a location for the proposed hospital and institute, the union health ministry sought for more information on each of the five suggested places on 7th March.

J Radhakrishnan, the health secretary informed that all the information of these five sites has been submitted to the centre and parliamentary committee by the state government.
