Allahabad University’s VC R.L.Hangloo Promotes Women's Studies

Allahabad University’s Vice- Chancellor R.L.Hangloo said on Saturday that women’s studies was a significant area of study which should be academically nurtured and expanded.

He urged research scholars to think indigenously and take up some villages near Allahabad for research on women’s studies. While addressing the 5^th anniversary lecture organized by Centre for Women’s Studies, AU, at University guest house hall.

The VC expressed confidence that the centre for women’s studies would become a full-fledged department in the years to come. Dean of Arts Faculty A. Satnarayana, who was the Guest of Honour, spoke on the relevance of women’s perspective in all spheres of study. He said that women’s perspective was lacking in the entire process of modernization.

Keynote Speaker Shefali Bhushan, a topper of 1994 batch of Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Milia Islamia, Delhi, spoke on women in the Hindi film industry and questioned as to why they were paid less than their male counterparts?

She said that it was difficult to put together a project with a woman as protagonist as “heroes” were perceived to be the crowd-pullers. She also spoke about the challenges of writing the role of female lead character with grey shades. The challenge of convincing a female actor to play a part that is not fully ‘white’ is great owing to the kind of reaction that one gets for such a character, said Shefali who has directed, written and co-produced feature film ‘Jugni’ released on January, 22, 2016.

Shefali said that difficult choices should be made by a woman in terms of family versus work and she was being judged for that. Earlier, the guests were welcomed by research associate Ruchika Verma. The event began with the presentation of a report by Director, CWS, Smita Aggrawal.
