Amartya Sen’s Tenure at Nalanda University Board ends; HRD Minister Explains the Move!

On the controversy of Amartya Sen not being appointed at the Nalanda University Governing Board, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said that an individual is answerable and must be held accountable regardless of their credentials as a scholar.

The minister also added that there was no political motivation behind the decision regarding Sen. The minister also cited the example of Congress leader Karan Singh who was reappointed on the basis of his credentials as a scholar as the Chairman of Auroville Foundation, HRD Ministry-governed autonomous body.

The minister added that a person is answerable regardless of how big a scholar he or she is. With position come a lot of responsibilities and a responsible individual must look after the expenses and provide clear details of the expenditure, added the minister on being asked about the end of Amartya Sen’s association with the Nalanda University Governing Board.

Sen was among the three board members that have not been reappointed including former Harvard Professor Sugata Bose and Lord Meghnad Desai, a UK-based economist. As soon as the announcement was made, Nalanda University was hit by a controversy over the termination of Sen’s association with the institute.

A new governing body has been appointed by the Government. Accusations have been hauled at the Government that the autonomy of the institute is being threatened. However, President Pranab Mukherjee approved the reformation of the Governing Board at Nalanda University and said that the move was in accordance with provision of the Nalanda University Act, 2010.
