Andhra Pradesh Government Urges MCI for Additional PG Medical Seats
- Due to lack of qualified professors in the government medical colleges, MCI had kept on hold the sanctioning of more PG medical seats.
- The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a new career advancement scheme to deal with it.
The postgraduate (PG) seats in government medical colleges across Andhra Pradesh are expected to go up due to career advancement scheme for professors, assistant professors and associate professors working in government medical colleges introduced by the Medical Education Department of Andhra Pradesh.
Earlier, the Medical Council of India had not sanctioned additional PG seats in government medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh due to the lack of qualified professors. Therefore, the Medical Education Department of Andhra Pradesh took up the issue into consideration and introduced the career advancement scheme.

Under the career advancement scheme, an assistant professor who completes a five-year term will be designated as an associate professor. Similarly, associate professors and professors will also be eligible for promotions after the completion of their prescribed tenure. The Directorate of Medical Education of Andhra Pradesh has sent a proposal to the state government in this regard and the file is pending with the Finance Department.

An official associated with the Medical Education Department of AP indicated that the government must increase the salaries if the teachers are given time-bound promotions. The government will take the final decision in this regard only after the approval of the Finance Department.
Recently, Guntur Medical College (GMC) sent a proposal to MCI to sanction 40 PG medical seats. A team from MCI will soon visit the college to inspect the facilities and infrastructure and prepare a report on their observations.
According to an official associated with GMC, if promotions are given, other medical colleges across the state would also fulfill the MCI norms for the grant of additional PG medical seats.
AT present, eight government medical colleges across the state together offer 800 seats in PG medical courses.
