Andhra Pradesh Govt. Set to Increase PG Medical Seats

The government of Andhra Pradesh is planning to increase postgraduate medical seats in Ongole, Srikakulam and Ananthapur. For this purpose, the government will write a letter to Medical Council of India (MCI) requesting to increase PG medical seats. If MCI gives the nod, the government will increase PG medical seats from the next academic session.

The government has to improve infrastructure like labs, libraries and construct hostel buildings in medical colleges to get the nod from MICI. The biggest challenge that the government is facing is a shortage of faculty in various medical colleges across the three regions. Hence, the government is gearing up to fill vacant faculty positions. The government has already started the process of increasing medical seats in Government Medical College, Anantapur.

The government has also prepared the list of eligible associate professors to be promoted as professors. The Directorate of Medical Education, Andhra Pradesh will send the list of assistant professors to the government for its nod.

After filling the vacant positions of professors and associate professors in various medical colleges across Ongole, Ananthapur and Srikakulam, the government will apply for PG medical seats. During the bifurcation process, most of the medical seats went to Telangana, and there is a shortage of PG medical seats in Andhra Pradesh. Hence, MCI is also favouring increase in PG medical seats.

On the other hand, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ongole is all set to get recognition from the central government soon.

Currently, there are 660 PG medical seat in 12 government colleges across the state out of which 630 seats have recognition from the central government.
