Approval of IIM Bill 2017 to enhance Business Education: Javadekar
- On December 19, 2017, Rajya Sabha passed the IIM Bill 2017, that grants additional autonomy to the reputed b-schools.
- The Bill also brings the IIMs under the banner of the Institute of National Importance.
Expressing his happiness on the approval of IIM Bill 2017 in Rajya Sabha, Union HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar mentioned that the government’s dream to grant autonomy to IIMs is realised now. The passage of IIM Bill 2017 is historic and very crucial for the students. With the approval of IIM Bill 2017, the diploma degrees offered by IIMs will be termed as Post Graduate (PG) degree, and the Fellow programme will be termed as the Ph.D. course. On the other hand, IIMs have become the institutes of national importance with the passage of IIM Bill 2017, added Javadekar.
Adding further, Javadekar indicated that the government is intended to provide better opportunities to students and autonomy to IIMs is one among the initiatives. Apart from IIMs, top performing universities and institutes will be given more autonomy with fewer regulations. Creating of 20 world class institutes by next year is also on the list of government in order to enhance the quality of education, said by Javadekar.
All about IIM Bill 2017: -
- The Bill, approved and passed by the Parliament of India, declares 20 IIMs as ‘Institutes of National Importance’.
- The Bill empowers IIMs to grant degrees instead of diplomas.
- IIMs will have complete autonomy equivalent to IITs and AIIMS.
- In each IIM, the Board of Governors will be the executive body, comprising up to 19 members.
- IIMs will have the power to nominate 17 members of BoG from diverse backgrounds with due representation of SC/ST and women candidates. State and central governments will nominate the remaining two members.
- IIM Board can appoint its own chairperson, while Board of Governors will appoint the Director.
- The Board will determine the pay of director.
- The Academic Council of all the IIMs will have the power to frame guidelines for conducting exams, admission process and academic content.
- With an objective to discuss matters of common interest, all the 20 IIMs will form a coordination forum.
