Article 370 Revoked: Fate of Jammu & Kashmir Students Uncertain

Amid heightened security and tension prevailing across Jammu & Kashmir, non-local students of various higher learning institutes in Jammu & Kashmir have been leaving for their native states. The confusion prevailing over Article 35A, 370 may be one of the major reasons for the suspension of classes in various educational institutes in J&K.

For instance, hundreds of NIT Srinagar students have left home on August 04, 2019, and the local administration has made special arrangements to facilitate their smooth journey. NIT Srinagar issued an order on August 03, 2019, stating the classes have been postponed until further orders. The institute did not mention any specific date to resume classes. Until the tensions subside in J&K, the classes are not going to resume, sources say.

The local administration has been playing a vital role in coordinating with the railway authorities to ensure the safe return of students. The local administration provided breakfast and accommodation to students at the railway station so that they do not face any hardship.

NIT Srinagar issued a notice for the suspension of classes only after it had received instructions from the District Administration of Srinagar. The district administration took up the safety of students as the first priority and ensured smooth transport of students.

Out of the 800 students enrolled at NIT Srinagar, half of the students are from different states across the country. With the suspension of classes, the fate of non-local students, as well as, local students is uncertain, as the academic session is completely being disturbed. Even though winter holidays are ahead, there is no clarity what happens after the revoking of Article 35A, 370.

Article 35A, 370 delimitations and trifurcation of the state will have different consequences; with J&K now being declared a Union Territory (Ladakh is also a UT now). And these consequences shall decide the fate of students. In the event of such an unprecedented activity, we are yet to see if the students who are currently pursuing courses in J&K in Engineering, IT, MBA or Medical, will be able to finish their semester on time or not. In case the colleges in J&K fail to complete the syllabus on time, there are chances that the students will be unable to appear for their final exams, which will delay their degrees, impacting their professional aspirations.

So far, no major issues have been reported, and all the non-local students of premier institutes like NIT Srinagar have been sent back to their state/native.
