'Artificial Intelligence and Humanity' Minor Launched at IIT Hyderabad
IIT Hyderabad has launched a Minor in Artificial Intelligence and Humanity. The Minor is an initiative of IIT Hyderabad's Department of Liberal Arts and it will be open to students from the second year.
Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H) has launched a Minor in Artificial Intelligence and Humanity. The Minor has been launched by IITH’s Department of Liberal Arts. So, what exactly is a Minor? Basically, it is a programme opted in combination with a Major course to give a boost to students' skills and career opportunities.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the popular areas of research and innovation and its influence on everyday lives is growing day by day. The Minor will help understand the way AI technologies shape our everyday life.
As per the official release of IIT-H, the Minor will benefit students and will help broaden their horizons beyond technical aspects. As part of this programme, humanities and social science researchers along with engineers and designers will come together to offer different perspectives on AI and Humanity.

Dr Aalok Khandekar, Assistant Professor of Anthropology/Sociology, Department of Liberal Arts, IIT Hyderabad, said that AI is gaining a lot of popularity among the youth of the country and it is already becoming a part of our everyday life and making tasks simpler. From healthcare to wildlife conversation to cataloguing biodiversity, AI can be found making phenomenal changes.
However, he also informed that there are several challenges that come along with AI such as private, labour and equity. Most of the labour in India work in the informal sector, therefore, it is very important to keep into account these factors.
The minor in AI and Humanity at IIT-H is one of the few initiatives globally in which emphasis will be laid on technology-in-the making than post facto analysis.

About IIT-H Minor in AI and Humanity
The minor is open to students from the second year and it is a 12 credit minor, which includes foundational courses in sociology, history, philosophy as well as courses focusing on the social political and economic aspects of AI.
As a part of the AI and Humanity Minor, students will have to take a term-based project work which will be offered by the faculty of design, liberal arts and engineering department to explore socio-technical aspects of AI.
