The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made an interesting announcement that the students studying in Class 6 to Class 9 have to attend the Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations at school to get good grades. If any student fails to do so, he/she might lose grades.

The announcement has been made by CBSE as a part of uniform assessment pattern, which requires schools to assess the students on their attitude towards nation, society, sincerity and other factors.

Through the new system, CBSE has separated discipline from scholastic activities and it will be graded separately. Apart from attendance and tidiness, schools have been asked by CBSE to assess or grade the students based on their sincerity towards the nation and society.

Under the new system, the grades for sincerity and discipline will be given on a three-point grading scale, i.e., ‘A’, which means equal to outstanding, ‘B’ as very good and ‘C’ will be termed as qualifying as fair.

However, some of the teachers opined that these factors are hard to quantify. Some also questioned the means to judge one's sincerity. One of the principals of a renowned school expressed that the teachers can make a note on the calendar if the students behave in an anti-social manner and it is the best thing they can do apart from judging the students on the basis of their sincerity towards the nation and society.

Another principal of a school opined that each school need to device independent mechanism to measure such intangible attributes of students and it could only come in the way of standardisation.
