The National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) has amended its rules and made B.Ed candidates eligible to teach Classes I to V. So far, only D.Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) holders were eligible for the appointment of teachers for Classes 1 to 5. The official notification in this regard was made available on the official website of NCTE.

NCTE B.Ed Eligibility Revised Rules:

  • Candidates who hold B.Ed degree with at least 50% of marks are eligible for primary teacher posts.
  • If B.Ed candidates are appointed as primary teachers, it is mandatory for them to undergo a six-month bridge course in elementary education recognised by NCTE within two years of the appointment.

State governments can consider B.Ed graduates for primary teacher posts in government schools. Similarly, B.Ed graduates can take up primary teaching posts in private schools across the country.

The decision of NCTE did not go well with numerous D.Ed candidates across the country. Allowing B.Ed candidates for SGT (Secondary Grade Teacher) posts will minimize the opportunities for D.Ed holders. Most of the D.Ed candidates are demanding the Union Government withdraw its decision in this regard.

In Andhra Pradesh, a section of D.Ed students staged a protest on July 04, 2018, demanding NCTE to withdraw its decision on allowing B.Ed candidates for SGT posts.
