With the release of the second cut-off for Delhi University admissions 2019, the colleges have been witnessing fewer admissions to the courses even with high applications to most of the popular programmes. The courses in demand such as Economics (Hons), B.Com (Hons) Mathematics (Hons), English (Hons) as well as Chemistry (Hons) still have many seats still available in many Delhi University Colleges such Ramjas College, Kamla Nehru College, Shri Ram College, among many others.

Sources state that the admissions to the BA English (Hons) is still available in 39 colleges out of the 46 DU colleges that offer the programme. They added that even though Delhi University witnessed a high application rate for the programme, this year, many students back off from taking admission in the programme. However, the cut-offs are still high even in the second cut-off for the programme. Sources state there are colleges where the seats were successfully filled were 10% of the total number of seats that are available in those colleges for the programme. For instance, the sources stated that Kamla Nehru College was able to admit a total of 6 students for the BA English (Hons) programme where there are 52 seats in total.

Teachers who were responsible for the admission process at these colleges stated that most students applied for the programme without realising what the programme had in offer in terms of the course curriculum. Due to the high cut-off marks that had been released, the faculties claimed, they were able to counsel the students properly, after which, many students opted out of the admission process for the programme.

In a similar fashion, out of the 41 colleges that offer BA Economics (Hons), 35 colleges still have vacant seats that need to be filled even though 1,24,538 candidates had applied for the programme. The second highest programme that has been in demand this year was BA (Hons) Political Science which also had the highest cut-off as well this year with 99% in the first DU cut-off list of Hindu College. However, this has not halted the admission of the candidates to the programme as there are only 25 colleges left, where the seats are vacant for the programme.

However, the situation for the science programmes at the colleges affiliated to Delhi University is said to be worse than for the Humanities and Commerce programmes. The admission convenor of Kirori Mal College, Sunil Singh, stated that the admissions to the science programme have been ‘abysmally low’. He stated that the high cut-offs are to be blamed but he also added that the high cut-offs have been put as a strategic action in order to reduce the chances of exorbitant admissions. He also added that the performance of the candidates in the stream of science has been lower than that of the Commerce and Humanities stream students across the different boards of education.

Ashwani Kumar who is an assistant professor at SRCC stated that the colleges were provided with limited time to analyse the applications that have been received, which has resulted in the high cut-offs that have been witnessed this year. He went on to add that the changes that were taking place especially with the extension of the admission date, has resulted in the high-cut-off marks in the first cut-off list.
