Backward Classes Queue for Study Abroad Scheme in Telangana
Telangana Government's Study Abroad scheme for Backward Classes (BCs) has become a huge hit as applications for enrolling under the scheme have increased. The BC Welfare Department has got 920 applications so far, and 624 have applied for the fall session.
Mahatma Jyothiba Phule BC Overseas Vidya Nidhi scheme is witnessing a massive response in Telangana. The Telangana government took this initiative for the academic upliftment of Backward Classes or BCs. Since then, many applications of meritorious students from the backward classes have been received for the scheme. Registers show that 624 students applied in the scheme for the 2018-19 fall session, and the spring session has received 920 applications so far.
The department selects 300 students per year and grants 20 lakh tuition fees for studying abroad from their listed countries and universities situated in Australia, Canada, US, UK, Singapore, New Zealand, Germany, France Japan, and South Korea. The increasing number of applicants per year only suggests the popularity of the mentioned scheme. The department also grants visa fees and one-way flight ticket up to Rs. 50,000.
There are certain guidelines for the applicants for applying as per the scheme, the guidelines are academic and economical. The academic guideline requires standardised marks for general examinations such as 500 in GMAT, 60 in TOEFL, 6.0 in IELTS, 260 in GRE and 50 in PTE. The applicant must have scored above 60% or equivalent grades in final exams of the streams such as engineering, pure sciences, agriculture sciences, management, humanities,medicine and nursing, and social sciences. The applicant’s family’s annual income has to be less than Rs. 5 lakh from all sources. The application must also have enrollment confirmation / I-20 and visa eligible.

Around 150 students availed the benefit of the scheme in the 2018-19 fall season and are pursuing post-graduate studies in reputed universities of the world. The rolling-in process of the current session is complete. An official mentioned that the merit list is going to be out soon.
