Basavaraj Rayaraddi, Minister of Higher Education, Karnataka revealed that the government is planning to set up International School of Economics at Bangalore University. The school will be named after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The Cabinet will take the decision in this regard, and a formal announcement will be made soon.

He also stated that the Chief Minister will lay the foundation stone for International School of Economics on April 14, 2017, on the occasion of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's birth anniversary. He indicated that Karnataka has the highest share of international students in India. Around 36% of international students are pursuing various courses in the state. The International School of Economics will strengthen the state's position as an education hub.

He mentioned that the government would establish a skill university in the state. The Chief Minister has constituted a high-level committee for this purpose.

He further revealed that the Education Department has also initiated distribution of free laptops to around 30,000 students belonging to Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes. The main objective of the department is to help the students to take up higher studies. The department had already called for tenders, and the scheme will be launched at the cost of Rs. 100 crore.

The government of Andhra Pradesh has also come up with an idea of distributing free smartphones to the students. The implementation of the scheme is underway and will come into effect soon. The government also announced overseas scholarships for SC/ST students.
