A request has been submitted to the honourable Supreme Court by Bar Council of India as they want to be the legal conducting body of the Common Law Entrance Test. Currently, the CLAT is conducted by the 17 National Law Universities of India on a rotational basis. The request was submitted by the Professor Shamnad Basheer asking SC to find one legal conducting body for CLAT. CLAT is a national level entrance exam which is conducted for students who wish to take admission in the various law colleges of India.

The BCI has suggested that if they are chosen as the conducting body of CLAT then they will make a legal education committee of the following so that the examination takes place in a smooth manner.

  • Sitting or Former Judges
  • Legal Educationists
  • Eminent Jurists

As it will be a committee of highly qualified experts the percentage of complaints or problems will go down significantly.

Bar Council of India wants to get the permission that they even mentioned the Advocate Act, 1961 in the request letter. This advocate act gives the power to effectively regulate legal education in India. The letter also stated that the CLAT is being conducted without a statutory body even though there is a qualified and capable body to conduct the test existent in India.
