Bio-bank Facility to be established at PGI-Chandigarh
A biobank facility will soon be established at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Institute.
A biobank facility will soon be established at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Institute, Chandigarh.
Doctors engaged in the facility said that this initiative will help them in preserving human tissues that would be very productive for research in related areas.
Various posts were set up by the governing body of PGI last month to help in setting up the biobank. The institute will soon start hiring for the same as soon as the proceedings of the meeting of the governing body are decided.

A biobanking facility similar to the one at Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai and some other hospitals in India will be developed that will be elemental in preserving the human tissues and serum, added the doctors of PGI.
Dr. Arunaloke Chakrabarti Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology, PGI, informed that bio-bank is a very productive facility and can be utilized in many ways. He also said that it helps in preserving the human tissue that is very useful in medicine research. This facility will also be useful in conducting epidemiology studies, he added.
Dr. Chakrabarti also said that the facility will solve the purpose of patient management. Detailed disease related research can prove to be useful in improving patient care.

According to a senior PGI faculty member, the development schedule was delayed. He also added that work related to the facility must have started long before but it was because of the delay on the administration’s part that the initiative was delayed. He was hopeful that the facility will soon be developed.
