Bombay HC Asks State Board to Consider Keeping Mathematics Optional in Class 10
- Bombay HC has asked education boards to consider Mathematics an optional subject for class 10 students interested in taking arts or other vocational courses.
- It has noted that several students drop out of schools after Class10 as they can’t clear Maths.
Bombay High Court today has asked education boards to consider Mathematics an optional one for the students of 10th standard who are willing to pursue arts or other vocational courses without any knowledge of Mathematics.
The bench of justices AM Badar and V M Kanade suggested this on the petition filed by Harish Shetty, a leading psychiatrist. The petition has raised the issue of the students who are unable to learn Maths at the school level. Further, it also referred to the steps taken by the academic board to help these students. The court noted that many students are forced to drop out after Class 10 since they are not able to clear the Mathematics paper.

Justice Kanade said that degree courses like arts and other professional courses do not require Mathematics. And if students are given an option to not opt for Mathematics, this will help them finish their graduation.
Kanade further informed about the old successful system of the Maharashtra state board where the students were allowed to pursue degree courses even if they have cleared at least seven or eight subjects that may or may not include Mathematics. He wondered as to why the state government decided to do away with it after following the system for many years. He expressed the idea for the board to again revert to the previous system.

The bench has asked the education boards to consult experts on whether its suggestion could be implemented or not. The court has directed the boards to revert latest by July 26.
