The High Court of Bombay dismissed the petition filed by an engineering graduate who is seeking a direction to Mumbai University to take back his degree as he acquired it by deceptive and unfair means. A division bench comprising of Justice Karnik and Shantanu Kemkar rejected the plea of Vaibhav Patil. The bench mentioned that there was no provision in the University Act by which the high court could give a direction to cancel the degree.

Patil, in his petition, mentioned that he had acquired a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) degree in May 2011 and was feeling restless as he resorted to unfair means to clear one subject in the first year of the engineering course. He mentioned that he paid a bribe to beneficiaries in a paper leak scam.

The bench rejected the plea as they did not want to put the petitioner into further difficulty of facing the prosecution as he claimed to have acquired the degree through fraudulent means.

However, Patil was disappointed with the decision of HC and decided to move on with his life and gave the stand of returning degree. Earlier, he approached a student body, and they too did not take the request of Patil into consideration.

He felt that he was unable to seek any job or business as he had a heavy burden on his heart and wanted to return the degree.
