All India Council for Technical Education has approved open book exam for engineering students. AICTE, in the past few months, has come up with several reforms such as induction and training programmes.

As per the new examination policy of AICTE, traditional examinations in India are very mechanical and they tend to promote rote learning rather than focusing on the overall development of the person.

Therefore, AICTE came up with open book examination policy. They are designed in such a manner that students can refer to their class textbooks, notes and other approved study material. This will help to test the student's practical knowledge, analysis and evaluation.

Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE stated that open book exam policy will only be applicable for those exams in which its possible. Some exams can include questions on the basis of memory. According to him, there are many other ways to test the knowledge and ability of the student which includes understanding the concept, analysing a situation, problem-solving, case study and others.

MK Panduranga Shetty, Governing Body Member of RV College of Engineering stated that this open book examination system is a great step towards transforming the examination system in the country. Students will be more attentive and motivated to read in the class. He further said that this will promote engineering colleges and institutes to invest more in their libraries and digital labs.
