Trend Change: Boys Opting for Women Studies to Understand Woman’s Psyche, Bag Corporate Jobs
- 70% boys among those enrolling for Women Studies course at Panjab University.
- Change in trend observed also reveals that boys are bagging corporate jobs by specializing in this field.
With an aim to learn more about women psyche, which could help them to secure jobs in the social sector or corporate world, more boys are evincing keen interest to enroll in Women Studies course at Panjab University. In the academic session 2016-17, 32 students enrolled in the course which included 21 boys. The same trend has been prevalent for the past two years where 70% of students enrolling in Women Studies course are boys. There could be numerous reasons for this as listed below: -
- Women Studies course offered by Panjab University is interdisciplinary.
- Any student can take up this course irrespective of their stream and the admission process is based on merit.
- More professionals, particularly HR related jobs give more preference to those who have studied subjects like Women Studies or Gender Studies.
- The course will enable the students to get a new perspective on women, particularly their life partners.

Emanuel Nahar (Dean of Students Welfare) indicated that the attitude of boys towards girls had changed a lot in the recent times. Those students who are pursuing Women Studies course are facing no problems and do not shy away from mixing-up in classrooms, team building exercises and cultural activities in the varsity.
Panjab University started Women Studies Centre in 1987. It began offering PG Diploma and M.Phil courses in Women Studies after 2000. In 2005, the varsity introduced Masters and Ph.D. courses in Women Studies and began to receive popularity among the students irrespective of their gender.

On the other hand, the career prospects in the field are also bright for boys. Opportunities to associate with Department of Social Welfare and Child Development as state project coordinators. They also get to participate in national level seminars or summits on women empowerment or related themes and deliver lectures.
