Cabinet Agrees for AIIMS in Telangana and Tamil Nadu
Two new AIIMS in Telangana and Tamil Nadu are to get established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana as approved by the Union Cabinet. The aim of the establishment is to cater the medical needs of both the regions.
The Union Cabinet has approved the setting up of a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Telangana and Tamil Nadu. According to a statement released by the officials, the AIIMS of Tamil Nadu will be set up at Madurai with a total cost of Rs. 1,264 crore. The Telangana AIIMS, on the other hand, would cost around Rs. 1,028 crore and will be established at Bibinagar.
Under the provisions of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the set up of the two institutions will take place. The main aim to set up the two institutions is to provide proper training and health education in order to make a major transformation in the medical system of the region. These establishments will also fulfill the needs of the healthcare professionals in the surrounding areas.

The Telangana AIIMS and Tamil Nadu AIIMS will cater the needs by setting up multi-specialty healthcare institutions. This will fill in the huge demands of doctors, nursing staffs and healthcare specialists of the area. The professionally trained group of doctors and specialists will then be available for the secondary and primary level medical institutions. These trained professionals will also be a supporting hand in the National Health Mission (NHM) an initiative by the Central Government.
The number of seats in each of these AIIMS would count to be 100 undergraduate MBBS and 60 Bachelor of Science in Nursing along with the 15-20 Super Specialty Departments. Approx 750 beds will be added in each AIIMS with Trauma or Emergency Beds, Private Beds, ICU Specialty, AYUSH Beds and Super Specialty Beds. The two institutions will also accommodate about 1,500 patients from outside the region on a per day basis.

The infrastructure of the two AIIMS will side the beautifully carved buildings with all the basic facilities intact. The complex of the AIIMS campus will consist of the teaching block for the nursing and other medical courses, hospital, residential complex, service and facility centers, AYUSH block, night shelters, auditorium, hostels and guest house. The structural set up is said to be based on the pattern of the AIIMS at New Delhi and other six states which was established under the Phase-1 of the PMSSY.
