Cabinet Approves New IISER in Orissa
The estimated cost for the establishment of temporary campus is Rs. 152.79 crore for the initial three years, i.e., 2016-19.
The Union Cabinet has finally given ex-post facto approval for the formation of new Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.
The Cabinet clarified that the new IISER at Berhampur would be established and run in a temporary campus from the academic session 2016-17. The estimated cost for the establishment of temporary campus is Rs. 152.79 crore for the initial three years, i.e., 2016-19. According to sources, the state government would provide land at free of cost for the construction of new IISER.

The Government directed the Ministry of Human Resource and Development to submit a proposal and detailed project report for the permanent campus. The construction of permanent campus would commence only after the submission of the report.
Further, the Cabinet has also given nod for the introduction of a Bill, namely, National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Second Amendment) Bill, 2016. The Bill will be introduced in the Parliament for the inclusion of IISER, Berhampur and IISER, Tirupati in the second schedule of National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER) Act, 2007 (29 of 2007).

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research has been declared as the institutes of national importance under NITSER Act 2012. Earlier, there were five IISERs, and a new IISER was established in Tirupati in the year 2015.
Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley announced the establishment of new IISER in Odisha in his Budget Speech in the year 2015.
