Calcutta Colleges Fail to Reimburse Admission Fee Even After Cancellation
Harassment due to Discrepancy and lack of Transparency reported in private and government college of Kolkata regarding the refund of Admission Fees after cancellation. Students write to University and the State Ministry.
Students of Calcutta Colleges allege that they are not given back the Admission Fees by the college or university even after a month of cancelling their admission.Some students told the media that even after the clear guidelines from UGC and the state higher education ministry, the colleges are not obeying the same.
Many students who applied for admission cancellation long ago for taking admission in another college or university have allegedly not paid back the admission fees by the college. Some students have also visited and written to the University of Calcutta and the State’s higher education ministry. The colleges, being enquired by the media informed that they will issue the refunds but did not mention about the specific date.
According to the state government’s policy, if one student cancels admission in one college after he/she gets admissions in another college, the college has to give back the admission fees within a period of 15 days. Students have said, even after a month passed, their admission fee has not been refunded yet.
One student took admission in UG Journalism course in South Kolkata’s Rani Birla College, she has told the media that after she cancelled her admissions, she was asked to drop an official e-mail for refunds, after that, she was also asked to submit a hard copy, a month has passed but the refunds have not been issued. This claim of the student has been confirmed by the University of Calcutta and West Bengal Bikash Bhavan which is the ministry of Higher Education of the state.
Even the scenario is same for the Private Institutes of Kolkata, a student, who took admission in a private college with Law stream by paying more than 1 lakh rupees said that he cancelled the admissions in the college as he secured a seat in a government college located in Pune, Maharashtra. However, there is no information regarding the refund of admission fees.
The same kind of allegations has been brought on government colleges like Gokhale Girls College, Vidyasagar College, AJC Bose College and Bhawanipore Education Society. The principal of Gokhale Girls College, Atishi Karfa did not pick up the phone when called to enquire about the matter. Even the registrar’s office of Bhawanipore Education Society did not pick up the call when contacted by a leading Bengali newspaper.
The principal of AJC Bose College, Prof. Purnachandra Maiti has said that the administrative council has recently held a meeting to resolve the issue, the college will issue a notification for admission fee refunds within 2 days. The Principal of Vidyasagar College, Prof. Gautam Kundu has assured the students that they admission fees of the cancelled admissions will be refunded once the admission process is completed. He has promised to introduced updated systems to issue the refunds as soon as a cancellation letter is received from the student from the next academic year.
Though some colleges replied with all due clarity, there are still questions on the transparency of the systems of other colleges including Private Institutions. However, it is true that a lot of students have reported their inconvenience regarding the refund of admission fees.
