For the first time, the University of Calcutta started to conduct centralised semesters for M.Sc courses in the university and all university affiliated colleges. In the first semester conducted by the university, the number of failures has gone up so much that the maximum number of affiliated colleges authorities are extremely disappointed.

In recent times, the University has allowed many affiliated colleges to conduct M.Sc courses. Even the result of the top-rated colleges such as Bethune College, Lady Brabourne has been bad. All of the candidates who appeared for the first semester of M.Sc Mathematics from Bethune College have failed miserably. In Lady Brabourne, there were 28 students who appeared for the first semester of M.Sc Mathematics out of which, 27 of the candidates failed.

Reportedly, the maximum students from the best colleges in the city have failed. Colleges such as Bangabasi Evening College - Kolkata, Fakirchand College - Diamond Harbour have reported high failure percentages also.

Prof. Mamta Roy, the Principal of Bethune College, Kolkata has informed that 11 out of 11 students from the college have failed in the M.Sc Maths First Semester of Calcutta University. The Principal of Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata has said that they are shocked to find out that only one student passed in the first semester out of 28. She also added that the University should be more sincere in making the question papers and moderating processes. She also informed the media that not only Mathematics, the results of Chemistry has also turned out to be bad.

Prof. Pratap Roy, HOD of Mathematics Department of Bethune College informed that there is no scope of ‘Internal Assessment’ of Mathematics Papers, unlike other subjects. He also added, “The students have taken admissions after cracking the entrance test. They have done well in the entrance. I am shocked to see the semester results.”

On the other hand, the students are out on the streets to demand justice. Yesterday, they first visited the College Street Campus of the University to talk with the Regulatory Department of the Examinations but couldn’t. They then went to the Rajabazaar Science College to show protests. A large section of the students has held the dissimilarities between the University’s and Affiliated College’s study structures responsible for the disappointing results. They told the media that the question pattern was as per the study pattern of the Calcutta University's Main Campus in which the students from affiliated colleges failed to cope up with.

However, all the claims have been rejected by Prof. Atasi Debroy, who is the Head of the Mathematics Department of Calcutta University. She said, “Students from colleges like Bethune, Lady Brabourne and others can opt for a re-evaluation of the answer sheets if they want. I can claim that the paper checking process had been done properly.” She also added that even inside the Calcutta University Campus, 20 out of 77 students have failed in the M.Sc Mathematics First Semester.
