Calcutta University to Hold Final Semester Exams One Month After it Reopens

The Calcutta University has announced that it will hold the final semester exams for its undergraduate and postgraduate courses one moth after the university reopens. In a notification released on its official website, Calcutta University declared its plan of conducting the exams after a month of reopening post lockdown.

The notification also declared that after the lifting of lockdown, Calcutta University and all its affiliated colleges will have to sanitise their premises within ten days. The nation-wide lockdown that was expected to last until 4th May 2020 had been extended till 17th May 2020.

On 9th May 2020, Saturday, in a meeting held by West Bengal Education Minister, Partha Chatterjee with the Vice-Chancellors of the state universities, landed to the conclusion that the academic calendar including the exams will begin within a month after the lifting of lockdown.

Partha Chatterjee said that the UGC guidelines depict the recommendations made by the state government on issues like conducting terminal examinations after the lockdown period ends. He further added that universities have even started the preparation to hold the examinations.

An official of the state education department also confirmed that universities like Calcutta University will hold the exam at home centres. This implies that the students will take the exam in their respective colleges itself.

In a revised academic calendar by the UGC, all universities were advised to conclude their even semesters for the 2019-2020 session by 31st May 2020. It also suggested that the year-end exams and the Intermediate semester/year exams should be conducted from 1st July 2020 to 15th July 2020 and 16th July 2020 to 31st July 2020 respectively.

UGC further recommended that the classes for the new session for the already enrolled students in the second and third year must commence from 1st August. It states that for the newly admitted students of the first year, the classes should begin from 1st September 2020.
