The decision has been taken by the University because of the delay in commencement of the 2016 session, which had caused difficulties in completing syllabi on time, therby resulting in holding of additional classes over the weekend. The delay in holding the classes had even pushed back first-semester examinations to January instead of December.
Ashutosh Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University said that the Post Graduation classes generally start by the end of August or the first week of September. As a result, the first semester of the PG course was affected. Now the University has decided to start all Masters courses from the first week of August. The admission process for PG courses will be closed within one month of declaration of final year results by the university. The process will also help in streamlining the undergraduate course results.

If the new initiative is completed on time, the teachers will get adequate time to coordinate with the student and finish their syllabus and special weekend classes will not be necessary. This comes amidst criticism by students and parents for delay in the declaration of the exam results by Calcutta University.
