Calcutta University to Organise Seminar on Challenges of Development, Governance and Democracy
- Calcutta University is organizing a National Seminar on Challenges of Development, Governance and Democracy in South and Southeast Asia on January 4, 2018.
Department of Economics, Department of Political Science along with the Centre for Urban Economic Studies, University of Calcutta is organising a two-day National Seminar from January 4 to January 5, 2018. The theme of the seminar is "Challenges of Development, Governance and Democracy in South & Southeast Asia" and the venue for the same is the University of Calcutta.
Seminar Theme:
The South Asian region has seen a lot of changes democratically in the recent years that have taken place at different historic phases and nation developing processes. This has led to newer strategies for improvement with respect to those already in existence that show their dominance in the territory. These events may have helped democracy in some cases making it more inclusive but some cases have resulted in scrutinizing and undermining it.
Points like economic well-being, human development in terms of capabilities and enlistments need to be looked into while redressing democracy. Apart from that, questions like the effect of migration on the well-being and democracy of the region, if the gendered migration is related to democracy also need to be kept in mind. With India emerging as the epicenter of the region, it needs to deal with this paradox that emerges at different levels which are more relevant in the context of the geo-economic narrative of India's Act East policy that attempts to revolve around a proactive multi-pronged strategy.
The seminar will aim to discuss strategies of governing development, emerging regime characters, agents or mediators of development like state, civil society associations, market etc. at comparative levels.
After reviewing the abstract the selected scholars will be informed by November 15, 2017. Selected participants will be provided with AC-III Tier train fare for the shortest route, local accommodation and conference lunch.
