Taking into account the huge evaluation errors and lack of experienced teachers to check the board answer sheets, the CBSE board is planning to start board exams in the month of February from 2018. According to reports, both Class X and XII Board exams will be starting around February 15 instead of March 1, 2018.

The main motive of this change is to achieve ‘error-free evaluations’ for board exam results. CBSE is also determined to shorten the exam process from 45 days to a month so that results could be declared early.

R K Chaturvedi, Chairman of CBSE, said that this will enable the board to declare board exam results around the third or fourth week of May. This will enable the students applying for undergraduate courses to finish their respective college admission process within the time which is otherwise done in haste.

The decision has been taken to prevent evaluation errors. In 2017 various students got marks below their actual score, which was uncovered only after they applied for the re-totalling.

The Chairman informed that most of the teachers are on summer vacation by the time evaluation process starts and that leaves the board with ad-hoc an inexperienced teachers to correct the answer sheets. With the exams ending early, there will be more experienced teachers available for the evaluation of answer sheets.

Close to 50,000 teachers participate in the evaluation process of CBSE Board Exam sheets every year. The evaluation is done across more than 2,000 centres that are mostly set up at the Kendriya Vidyalayas.

Chaturvedi also added that the CBSE is planning to start evaluation training sessions for teachers similar to the teacher training programme. The training will be started in December 2017.

Speaking about the re-evaluation process, Chaturvedi said that it was scrapped because very few students used to apply for the process. He also added that since the process used to begin after the summer vacations, it was difficult to find experienced teachers who would re-evaluate the sheets.

Chaturvedi further said that the process disturbs the entire academic schedule and compartment exams as well. He also stated that the system of re-evaluating just 10 questions doesn’t make sense and that re-evaluation must either be done for the entire answer script or not at all. The matter regarding re-evaluation has been challenged in court but the decision has not been made.
