CBSE Class 10 Board Exam to become Mandatory Again

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to prepare a set of questions for the Class 10 final exam in an attempt to bring back the class 10 board exam for all schools affiliated to it.

A meeting will be held where the HRD Minister will discuss the revival of Class 10 board exam and making it compulsory for all students with the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), on Tuesday, October 25.

Mahendra Nath Pandey, Junior Minister, HRD ministry said that there will be representations from various states and other delegates as the board exam is still optional in CBSE affiliated schools.

The 10th Class CBSE board exams were made optional for students studying in CBSE affiliated schools, in 2011. The matter has been a topic of debate as many educationalists believed that this will depreciate the quality of education. Class 10 board exams are considered to be the beginning of higher education that plays a key role in shaping a student’s skills.

According to a data put up by CBSE, close to 1.5 million students registered for CBSE boards or school-based class 10 finals in 2016, out of whom 1.4 million passed. It was also stated by various experts that the students who didn’t perform well were also being promoted to keep in line with the no-detention policy.

The HRD ministry will also be discussing the no-detention policy as it is hampering the quality of education. Options will be given to each representative state to make a decision regarding the no-detention policy.

Education ministers of all states, as well as central ministers, will be present at the meeting to discuss the issue.
