CBSE is planning to implement two test paper options for the Class 10 Mathematics exam 2020. As per the plan, CBSE will prepare two types of question paper for Class 10 Mathematics exam. Students willing to take up Mathematics in higher studies can choose higher-level Mathematics paper while students willing to choose other courses apart from Maths can choose standard-level question paper. If everything materializes as per the plan, CBSE will include the two test paper options in the Class 10 board exams registration form.

The syllabus of standard and higher-level Maths question paper will remain the same, and there will be a difference in the difficulty level of the questions. If the idea works well and receives positive feedback, CBSE will extend the same for Class 12 board exams. CBSE has constituted an expert committee comprising of mathematics experts from universities, schools and NCERT (National Council of Education Research and Training).

As per the National Curriculum Framework (NCF), subjects should be examined at two levels by the CBSE, and the same can be implemented for Mathematics and English initially. Students must have the freedom to choose higher or standard level question paper, as stated by NCF.

One of the officials of CBSE explained that the syllabus, teaching and pedagogy would remain the same, but the same syllabus will be examined at the two levels.

According to sources, the higher-level question paper will have more questions on applied mathematics and questions based on higher order thinking skills. Several schools recommended CBSE to implement two question papers for the benefit of students.
