Question 1: Multiple-Choice Question

Choose the set of sex-determining chromosomes that indicates the correct sex of the respective organism.
(a) Homozygous sex chromosomes (ZZ) determine female sex in birds
(b) XO type of sex chromosomes determine male sex in grasshoppers
(c) XXY condition in humans, as found in Turner Syndrome, determines male sex
(d) Homozygous sex chromosomes (XX) produce male sex in Drosophila

Question 2: Very Short Answer Type Question

Write the first step the primary effluent undergoes when it enters the secondary treatment plant and state the purpose.

Question 3: Short Answer Type Question

The length of DNA in any cell is far greater than the dimension of its nucleus. Explain how this enormous DNA is packaged in a eukaryotic cell.

Question 4: Case-Based Question

The following pedigree chart shows the inheritance of a genetic disorder up to three generations of a family.


Observe the chart and answer the questions that follow.
(i) Is the disease sex-linked or autosomal as per the chart ? Give reasons in support of your answer.
(ii) Is it a recessive or a dominant disorder ?
(iii) Write the genotypes of the individuals C, D, and H?.
(iv) (a) If the female 'D' marries a normal man, what will be the probability of their daughter being a sufferer of this disease ?
OR
(iv) (b) disease, what will be the probability of their daughter being a sufferer of this disease ?

Question 5: Long Answer Type Question

Protein synthesis requires the services of all three types of RNAs, namely t-RNA, m-RNA and r-RNA. Explain the role of each of them during the process of protein synthesis in prokaryotes.
