Union Minister of Human Resource and Development, Prakash Javadekar confirmed that the CBSE class X board exams would be reintroduced as a part of the ongoing reforms in the education system. At present, students of class X students who are from the CBSE board have the option to appear or opt out of the board exams. Students who opt out of the board exam system are required to take the school-based exams.

Apart from that, Javadekar also revealed that class V and class VIII students will also have to appear for board exams following which, those who fail, will be detained in the respective classes. However, they will be given another chance to appear and improve in another set of examinations before being completely detained. As per the existing rules, students up to Class VIII are promoted to the next class irrespective of their academic performance.

While giving details about the acceptance of the same, Javadekar revealed that 25 states have approved the central government’s decision to reintroduce class X board exams and detaining those who fail in class V and class VIII board exams.

Last week, Javadekar confirmed that the spiking of marks in Class 12 and Class 10 board exams would be discontinued from next year. He issued an advisory to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and other state boards to stop the practice with immediate effect. But on the other hand, the school boards will continue with the practice of awarding marks for difficult questions, which is also referred to as the moderation policy.
