The CBSE board has revised its evaluation and assessment process as an attempt to improve the results of learning and encourage creative and critical thinking among students. This step of CBSE is followed by the decision of the MHRD to participate in Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) in 2021.

This change in the evaluation is not just because of the prospect of PISA. The performance of class 10th students in the National Assessment Survey of 2017-2018 has been dismal and serves as another reason in promoting changes in the assessment model of the board.

The National Survey reported the performance of class 10th CBSE students as:

  • Mathematics - 52%
  • Science - 51%
  • Social Science - 53%
  • English - 58%
  • Modern Indian Language - 62%

It does place CBSE students above average but it clearly indicates that there is a vast scope for improvement.

The proposed plan of CBSE will start an internal assessment component up till class 12th for all subjects. The CBSE board exams used to be of 100 marks for subjects like Legal Studies, Political Science and Mathematics but now internal assessment of at least 20 marks will be conducted for Mathematics and English.

The question papers of board exams will also comprise an objective component, according to the proposed scheme. A minimum of 25% marks will be allotted to these objective questions which will also include multiple choice questions.

The remaining 75% of the paper will consist of subjective questions whose number will also be decreased. The aim to do this is to let students have enough time to provide creative and analytical responses. Students are also habitual of writing answers as written in the textbooks. It is important that they develop their own style of writing and not rewrite or paraphrase what the book says. Therefore, CBSE has decided to start an internal assessment for English as well to help students develop their own style of writing.
