Students of CBSE will now be taught Artificial Intelligence (AI) from class 8 onwards. AI will now be considered as a sixth subject (optional subject) from the next academic year for class 9 students. The new academic session will start on April 2019. AI is one of the few subjects that have been introduced in the CBSE programme along with yoga and Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE). The curriculum for CBSE AI elective will be prepared by IBM India. To begin with, IBM will conduct a pilot project in 1000 schools in Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Bhubaneswar.

The pilot project of IBM will begin with creating awareness for school principals which will be followed by training of the teachers on the foundation skills of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Realizing the importance and potential of AI in the future resulted in the board deciding the inclusion of AI as a sixth subject. According to CBSE, this step will help the students be sensitised to the world of AI. The board has also decided that the schools begin teaching the 12-hour “Inspire Module” at Class 8 itself. Subjects like AI, yoga, and ECCE are skill subjects.

CBSE AI Curriculum Important Topics

CBSE AI Curriculum will include the following topics:

  • Orientation on AI
  • AI Ideation and Innovation Workshops

The curriculum will also include Capstone Project where students will be mentored by IBM experts for advanced prototype development. Top 40 students from 1000 schools across India will be selected for the Capstone Project.
