Recently, the Central Government has directed the CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) to hold talks with various states about removing marks disparity in board exams. Union Minister of State HRD, Mr. Satya Pal Singh explained that the existing disparity in marks awarded to students in board exams by CBSE and various state boards is leading to several contradictions while conducting the admission process for UG courses by various universities or state admission authorities.

For example, when students who cleared Class 12 through CBSE or state boards apply for UG admission by submitting their mark sheets, the universities must make a comparison between subjects or papers of different boards. Further, the varsity or admission authority must formulate a ratio to arrive at an admission formula. Such a process is leading to several contradictions, and is creating confusion about the admission process, he explained.

Mr. Satya Pal Singh further indicated that the HRD Ministry had instructed the CBSE to negotiate with other state boards on the issue. All the boards must come to a common idea on how to remove the disparity in marks awarded by CBSE and state boards to students in board exams, he added.

The minister mentioned that awarding marks remained in the purview of school education department of various state boards. However, a consensus is necessary for this issue, he concluded.
