CBSE Reviewing CCE and Optional Class X Board Exam

The Central Board of Secondary Education is reviewing the optional board exams for Class X and the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) followed in affiliated schools.

R K Chaturvedi, Chairman of CBSE said that a dual system for the Class X exams is confusing for a lot of students and parents and redundant elements can be removed. The board has undertaken the review as many schools and state governments expressed their opinion in favour of making the exam compulsory again.

He also said that a committee had been set up to suggest changes in the examination bylaws and affiliation rules. Student-friendly initiatives like allowing students to apply for certificates from any regional office are in the pipeline.

These bylaws were written long back. There are many things not clear in these bylaws. Since education is dynamic and it needs reform, the board has constituted a committee to do away with the ambiguities. The committee is headed by Pavnesh Kumar, former Controller of Examinations. The idea is to improve the examination system.

The Board is planning to digitise all data related to its schools. Right now there are 18,000 schools under its fold. It is a big task to track all the schools. Therefore the board have devised a system for which the schools have to make several mandatory disclosures. If the board have all the data then it can improve its planning

The bylaws say facilities offered by schools should be proportionate to the fees. The schools have to put all their date on their website. The board is also in favour of speeding up the affiliation process and undertaken an e-affiliation initiative and is planning to create a new wing for that.

CBSE is also taking up a major task of sanitising the data of the schools before going for the final print off certificates to avoid errors.

The Chairman also said that these certificates are primary documents for everything so the system needs to be sanitised. Now students will be able to download their certificate from a digital locker.

CBSE is also digitising all its certificates, starting with those from 2015 onwards. Candidates in need of their certificate can get it from any of the regional offices. Previously, certificates were available only in the specific region from where the candidates had taken the board exam. All the information on examination centres is going online. This would help the candidates to locate a centre on GPS maps in their mobile phones and to view its facilities.
