The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has confirmed discontinuation of English Communicative subjects for Class IX students from the academic session 2018-19. Last week, CBSE issued an official circular to all the schools stating that Code 101 (English Communicative) will not be one among the options for the schools to select for the students entering into Class 9.

Apart from English Communicative, CBSE also discontinued two other electives including e-Publishing and e-Office (Course Code: - 354 and 454) and Information and Communication Technology (Code 166) for Class 9 students.

For Class 11 students, CBSE discontinued three electives that include: -

  • English Elective CBSE
  • Multimedia and Web Technology
  • Dance – Mohiniyattam

CBSE further clarified those students who have already been pursuing these courses shall continue with the same subjects in Class X and Class XII.

Apart from the subjects scrapped by CBSE, a decision has been taken to replace Sanskrit Communicative course with Sanskrit. A new course, i.e., Computer Applications replaced the existing Foundations of Information Technology course.

CBSE also directed the teachers to teach Computer Science (new) course from the academic session beginning in 2019. For this purpose, CBSE schools will have to impart necessary training to the teachers. For the upcoming academic session, Class 11 students will have the option to choose either Computer Science (new) or Computer Science (old) course.

As far as Academic Electives concerned, CBSE merged Mass Media, Fashion Studies and Agriculture with similar vocational electives. These vocational electives will be offered to Class XI students this year.
