As usual, Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE will continue to conduct National Eligibility Test or NET. Currently, the government is not in plans to hand over the responsibility of conducting NET exam to any other mechanism. Minister of State (HRD), Mr. Mahendra Nath Pandey gave clarification regarding the same through a written statement in Rajya Sabha. However, he has not given any clarification whether the NET examination will place once or twice a year.

Usually, NET exam takes place twice a year, i.e. in July and December. Recently, a notification issued by UGC and CBSE confirmed that there will be no July session NET examination this year. NET 2017 will take place in November. Enraged with the decision of UGC, many aspirants protested against the decision of cancelling the July session NET exam. According to sources, due to the lack of clarity on the proper mechanism to conduct NET exam, the government has pushed the July exam to November. Earlier, there were speculations that NET exam will be conducted only once a year. The aspirants lack clarity on whether NET exam takes place once or twice a year.

A few months back, CBSE wrote to UGC expressing its inability to conduct the NET examination. CBSE mentioned that conducting examinations for various bodies has been obstructing the board to concentrate on its core competencies.

During the Union Budget session 2017-18, the government announced that National Testing Service or NTS will be introduced which will cater to all mechanisms in relation to the conduction of entrance exams for various bodies. The government also stated that NTS would come into effect this year. However, nothing has been materialised yet in this regard.
