CBSE to Undertake Periodic Review of Books of Private Publishers

CBSE will make a periodic review of the text books to cheek the textbooks of private publishers, prescribed for affiliated schools.

To check if the textbooks of private publishers, prescribed for CBSE affiliated schools, are in accordance with the framework of the National Curriculum, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will undertake periodic reviews of the books.

The decision came after a meeting of the officials of Human Resource Development Ministry with National Council of Educational Research and Training and CBSE. Now, as per the decision taken CBSE and National Council of Educational Research and Training or NCERT will ensure that the books are in accordance with the National Curriculum Framework.

An official of CBSE said that around 1,400 schools across the country have raised an indent for the text books from class I to class XII published by NCERT for the next academic session starting from 2017. So far, an indent for around 32 lakh NCERT books has been raised. The council has to make available these books before the commencement of the new academic session.

After the requests of several schools, the board had extended the deadline of the indent from 22 February to 28 February 2017. The officials of HRD ministry had been holding regular meetings with NCERT and CBSE in this regard.

The official further said that the government will ensure that there are sufficient numbers of NCERT books so that parents and students are not forced to purchase expensive books from private publishers. There should not be any artificial scarcity of the books, he added. Now, the government will be vigilant against the nexus of the schools and the private publishers. There used to be a number of complaints earlier from the parents regarding scarcity of textbooks.
