Central Library not Accessible to SOL Students of Delhi University

The central library of the University of Delhi has issued a notice stating that the students from SOL (School of Open Learning) will not be allowed to access the services of the central library, which is located at the Arts faculty in North Campus. The notice issued by the central library enraged over 2 lakh students enrolled in various courses under the distance mode. Many students termed that the central library is showing ‘discrimination’ by restricting SOL students from accessing the services of the library.

A notice stating the same (as mentioned above) was posted on the library door. However, the notice does not have the signature of the concerned authority issuing the order. Already, SOL students do not have library facilities at study centres. Restricting SOL students from accessing the services of central library is being considered an unfair move.

The students affected by the decision said that a few SOL students use the services of the central library. There is no need to put a separate notice barring SOL students from using the library, said a student.

Librarian of Delhi University, Mr. DV Singh clarified that SOL students are not a part of Delhi University. School of Open Learning is an autonomous body, which has its own library. The varsity does not allow SOL students to use the central library as many of these students use the library to prepare for competitive exams.

School of Correspondence Courses and Continuing Education was the old name of SOL. It offers postgraduate and undergraduate courses in distance mode. The classes are usually held during weekends. Different colleges are used as centres to conduct classes. This year, the classes for SOL students were delayed by two months.
