India is set to witness the establishment of three new Central Universities, which have been approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, 4 December 2019. As per the proposal, the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth (SLBSRSV) and Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan in Delhi and Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (RSV) in Tirupati, will be converted into Central Universities for Sanskrit.

The objective behind the proposal, which is expected to be passed in the current winter session of the Parliament, is to establish three Central Universities for Sanskrit if the Central Sanskrit University Bill is Passed. Presently, India has established Central Universities each for Hindi, English and Urdu.

After the Bill has been passed through the parliament, the three universities will be renamed. As per sources, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan will be named as Central Sanskrit University, SLBSRSV will be named as Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University and RSV will be called as National Sanskrit University.

The ministry has listed down the justification to the establishment of the Central Universities. Among the justifications, it states that the status of Central University will enhance the eminence of the three institutions. Moreover, the Institutions will further be able to employ better faculty as well as enrol international students. With the implementation of the Bill, it is expected to see courses in Indian Philosophy and Yoga being introduced through the Central Universities.
