All Central Universities Likely to Start Offering 4 Year Undergraduate Courses
The central universities in India are expected to start offering 4 year UG programmes as per the New Education Policy 2020. The UGC has commenced discussions regarding FYUP with the universities.
Four Year Undergraduate Programmes or FYUP are an important part of the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It is expected that these bachelor level courses will start being implemented across all the central universities in the country soon. The Education Ministry has already given a kick-start to the process by asking the Vice Chancellors of these varsities to devise plans for the execution of the new initiative.
The Education Ministry aspires to start offering the four year undergraduate programmes soon. Therefore, it wants to begin the discussion on 3-year and 4-year graduation and another 2-year PG programme in all 45 central universities of the country now. This will ensure that the process of implementation gets started and proceeds quickly.

Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister, spoke about this initiative by the authorities. He said that this time under the new education policy, there is a 3-year degree course along with a 4-year degree course in the alternative. Similarly, the programme at the masters level is of the duration of two years as well as one year. Pradhan told the VCs (Vice Chancellors) of all central universities that they have autonomy and can roll out the process as per their judgement. He asked them to be ready with their decisions by next year.
These instructions were given to the vice-chancellors by the Union Education Minister in a meeting that was held specifically for this issue. It has been decided in many universities that the four-year undergraduate course will be introduced from the next academic session itself. The Ministry of Education has acknowledged that the process takes time but it has directed that the system has to be taken forward in a timely manner.
