The Union Health Ministry has directed all states in India to conduct ‘centralised counseling’ for admission all post-graduate medical & dental programmes in medical colleges in India. All government, private as well as deemed universities will be required to adhere to the centralized counseling from the academic year of 2017. The objective behind this landmark move is to create a single window system for admissions to MDS, MS, MD, and PG Diploma programmes in India.

Prior to this, the admission process for admission to MD and MDS colleges in states included Counselling by a designated authority or by medical colleges individually at the institute level. However, the Medical Counselling Committee was responsible for filling 50% of the Quota seats. In 2017 too, quota seats for state-run dental and medical colleges will follow the same pattern.

Under Secretary to the Government of India - Amit Biswas, said in a letter addressed to all Principal Secretaries of Medical Education that keeping in mind the success of conducting a single medical entrance exam at the UG level in 2016, it is in the best interest that the same pattern be followed at the PG level as well. The Supreme Court of India had decided to conduct the NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test - UG for admission to MBBS/BDS courses in government, private medical and dental institutes in India including deemed universities in April 2016.
