Centre Planning to Award Scholarships to All Eligible Students in J&K
The Union Government plans to do away with the 2 lakh quota of Minority Scholarships for Jammu & Kashmir. To award the scholarship in unlimited number to whoever applies to it and fulfils eligibility criteria.
The Central Government of India is planning to award scholarships to all eligible applicants from Jammu & Kashmir. It is learnt that the union government will do away with the state quota scholarships given to students previously.
Till now, J&K students are offered scholarships by the Ministry of Minority Affairs and Begum Hazrat Mahal Scholarships given to minority girls. The current number of scholarships which are awarded to J&K students are 2 lakhs which are given on the basis of merit to the applicants. The centre may demolish the 2 lakh count and award unlimited scholarships to all the eligible students applying for the scholarship.
The Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSC) will be given to the Jammu & Kashmir state students whose family income falls below the prescribed amount and looking for educational opportunities outside the state. The scholarship will be given on the basis of the application made.
Generally, the national scholarship quota is fixed on the basis of the number of minorities living in a particular state. In J&K, the scholarships were given for Matric and Post-Matric level studies. According to government sources, this policy would be waived off for Kashmir.

According to the sources, students from all six minority communities - Muslims, Jains, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs and Parsis are eligible to apply for the Minority Scholarship. A government source said that the centre receives a huge number of applications per year from each state but can only give scholarship based on the quota decided by each state. The quota is decided on the basis of the minority population within the state.

However, for Jammu and Kashmir, the plan will be to give scholarships to eligible candidates, if they are eligible for the same regardless of the state quota.
