After six months of continuous student protests against the management, it has come to light now that Avinashilingam University is not under the threat of automatic de-recognition by UGC as earlier feared.
A careful reading of relevant rules shows the decision vest with the Centre and college authorities are optimistic.
The Avinashilingam Educational Trust, even though it is a private body, shall continue to be the sponsoring society of the university and receive funds from the Centre is possible as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations 2010, amended in 2014.
Until now, the protest was against the management as it was believed that the university had violated UGC regulations by not submitting the mandatory memorandum of association (MoA).
The faculty had supported this "suspicion" after a letter from the UGC was sent to the university on August 27 this year. The letter had stated that the university, if not handed over to the Union ministry of human resources and development, shall not receive its non-plan grants fromMarch 31, 2017.
