The Minister of Human Resource and Development Prakash Javadekar said that the central government is planning to set up 10-20 more accreditation agencies besides NAAC. He mentioned that it is tough for NAAC to assess 38,000 colleges which are prevalent in India. It can give accreditation only to 1,000 colleges in a year. It means it takes 38 years to complete the accreditation of all the colleges.

He mentioned that the ministry had requested IITs and IIMs to act as accreditation agencies. These institutions are set up by the government and have good students support system too. The ministry has been working consistently to make the process speedy, increasing options for the college and ensuring that no malpractices take place.

He was addressing the students of Indira Group of Institutions. He interacted with the students and answered various questions posed by the students. He spoke about the quality of education and cited the examples of two great Indian women sportspersons who excelled in Olympics. He congratulated their parents for encouraging them to make a career in sports.

One of the students raised a question regarding low international rankings, and the minister replied that 40 percent of marks in rankings is based on perception. Most of the premier institutions in India lack perception. Inviting more international students to Indian Universities is one of the best strategies to fill the gap. So, the primary focus of the ministry is to win the perception battle.

Speaking about the vacant faculty positions in IITs, he said that the directors of IITs had been told to go abroad and identify alumni and invite them to India on teaching positions.

He concluded by saying that the New Education Policy is online and invited suggestions from people. The last date for submitting suggestions on the draft is September 30, 2016.
