Chair Professorship Award Introduced by IIT-Kharagpur in Architecture and Regional Planning Department
A chair professorship award has been introduced by the renowned IIT, Kharagpur at the department of Architecture and Regional Planning in the honor of late Avinash Gupta, 1968 B.Arch batch.
A chair professorship award has been introduced by the renowned Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur at the department of Architecture and Regional Planning in the honor of late Avinash Gupta who was part of the 1968 B.Arch batch.
The award will include cash of up to Rs. 20,000 per month exclusive of the monthly salary that is given to a permanent professor in Architecture, Regional Planning. Apart from this, interest in health care facilities will also be provided to the awardee. The award was announced on the first day of the 62nd convocation of IIT-Kharagpur held on Saturday, July 30.

Ron Gupta will donate at least Rs 2.4 lakh per year to IIT-Kharagpur on behalf of the friends and family members of Avinash Gupta. This amount will be paid by July each year for the next five years to help provide the chair Award expenses for the position mentioned above for a duration of 12 months.
An official from IIT Kharagpur also said that the selection for the chair position is expected to be done in the beginning of the academic session 2016-17. As per the information, the award will originally be for three years, and may be prolonged by another two years.
Avinash Gupta – in whose memory the award is being introduced – last served as the Executive Vice-President at Post Buckley Schuh and Jernigan which is a prestigious Architectural/Engineering company based in Florida, USA.

The institute has also taken up the initiative to develop the foundation work for construction of the main hospital building for the Dr. BC Roy Institute of Medical Science and Research which is near to completion.
The official also informed that work has now progressed to the second-floor level. Thirty new classrooms have already been built at Nalanda Academic Complex. Also, six new floors have been completed at the JC Ghosh Science Block and the PC Ray Laboratory Block have been completed.
The institute has also taken up the initiative to improve electricity management and usage. The street lights have been converted to LED street lights in phases.

A solar power plant of 100kW has also been installed on the rooftop of the Mathematics Department of the Institute. The power generated by this solar plant is being fed to the Grid. A total of 80,000 units has been generated in six months. Proposal to install a 1000kW solar plant has also been approved and tendered.
