Inking its name in the glorious history of India’s rise as a superpower, the Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science & Technology (KCCRSST) has been inaugurated at Chandigarh University by the country’s Honourable Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This INR 3.5 crore project, along with securing its status as a first of its kind in North India, acts as a crucial step to elevate India’s education and science sectors towards its goal of a global spread and to strengthen the private sector of the country.

After the inauguration, the Defence Minister of India addressed KCCRSST saying, “This achievement of Chandigarh University emphasises the importance of the private sector for the educational development of the country. Rising India must be restored to its earlier status as a ‘knowledge economy, and through the coalescing of the private sector with the government, India is moving forward at an ever-increasing pace.”

KCCRSST is essentially the four-minute mile for every student aspiring to partake in Space Science Research and satellite-building as CUSAT, the Chandigarh University’s nanosatellite built by its 75 students, is set to be launched on the eve of India’s 75th Independence Day in 2022. This satellite would hover over the region of Punjab, marking the state as the first border state in India to have its own satellite, and would collect data regarding border intrusions, weather and natural disaster forecasting, agriculture, etc.

Along with its aim to train Indian as well as foreign students in Satellite Design and Development, KCCRSST would also act as a Ground Control Station for CUSAT, a Geo-Spatial Centre for Research, and as a member of SatNOGS, it would also monitor more than 380 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with more than 810 transmitters in over 50 countries.
