Changes Implemented in Delhi University in 2016: For Better or for Worse?

With the Delhi University admission process a few months away, here is a look at why it manages to remain one of the top most universities in India till today. In 2016, most of the things did not remain static for long at Delhi University. The varsity implemented major changes in its policies and admission processes in the last two years. For instance, DU introduced online admission process in the year 2016. Everything was carried out in online mode from the application process to the payment of examination fee.

Apart from online admission process, University of Delhi also introduced the Joint Admission Test(JAT) for admission to Bachelor of Management Studies or BMS programme. Applicants cleared the entrance examination for the admission to BMS programme at Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies. Similarly, entrance exams had been carried out for admission to B.A (Hons) Business Economics courses at ten colleges affiliated to Delhi University.

Major entrance tests that were conducted by DU in the year 2016:

• Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education carried out an entrance examination for the admission to B.Sc Sports, Health Education and Physical Education
• Central Institute of Education also conducted an entrance examination to fill 400 seats in eight colleges which offer Bachelor of Elementary Education programme.
• Cluster Innovation Centre conducted an entrance examination for B.A (Hons) Humanities and Social Sciences, B.Tech (Mathematical Innovations and Information Technology)
• Indraprastha College for Women also conducted entrance examination for B.A. (Hons) Multimedia and Mass Communication

Other Major Changes in DU:

• Admission through ECA and sports quota were carried out through online centralised registration
• 5% Subject-wise reservation of seats for ECA category
• Various colleges conducted sports and fitness trails
• For conducting admission process for ECA quota, 75% weightage was given as per the performance of the candidates in trails and 25% to certificates
• For admission through sports quota, 50% weightage for trails and 50% to certificates
• The candidates who changed the streams while applying for colleges were imposed 2.5% penalty in marks

While these changes may have been implemented keeping the best of intentions in mind, only time will tell the practicality of the changes for students, wards and teachers of DU! What do you think?
