Chemistry Not a Mandatory Subject for Admission in B.Tech/ B.E: AICTE
AICTE has removed Chemistry from the list of eligible subjects for B.Tech admissions. Check the list of eligible subjects for B.E/ B.Tech admissions here.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has clarified that Chemistry is not mandatory for admission in B.Tech/ B.E (Bachelor of Engineering/ Technology) course. Earlier, candidates with Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry as main subjects in 12th are eligible for admission in B.Tech. However, AICTE has removed the Chemistry subject from the eligibility criteria. The council is going to publish the handbook for 2020-21 academic session soon, and the same rule will be included in the handbook.
Candidates who are pursuing or completed Class 12th with Physics, Mathematics along with some optional subjects like Biology, Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Studies, Engineering Graphics, Biotechnology and Agriculture are eligible to take up B.Tech/ B.E course.
Experts’ Opinion and Feedback
The decision of AICTE was not received well by experts. According to them, Chemistry is one of the foundation courses for B.E/ B.Tech, and scrapping the same from the list of eligible subjects will have an adverse impact.
According to a professor, the quality of engineers may deteriorate as Chemistry knowledge is a must for engineering stream. For instance, civil engineers need knowledge on the composition of soil or the composition of cement. Without these, absorbing the concepts can become very difficult for students. Similarly, all other major specializations require at least basic knowledge of Chemistry, he added.
Experts urged AICTE to stick with the existing rules of eligibility for admission in engineering courses.
Students aiming for B.Tech admission for the academic session 2020-21 must note that you can get admission in the same with Physics and Mathematics as the main subjects. Chemistry is no more a mandatory subject for B.Tech admission.
